When we take a broad view of scripture, we discover that prayer serves many purposes, but at its heart, prayer is about connecting with our Creator.  God is always present with us. Through His Holy Spirit, He remains near, and prayer is one of the ways we acknowledge His presence and and intentionally deepen our relationship with Him.

Through prayer, we worship and honor God, pray on behalf of others, confess our sins, listen for the leading of His Spirit, express gratitude, give Him praise, share our deepest thoughts and emotions, and bring our requests before Him. We ask, we seek, and we knock.  When we consider all the different expressions of prayer, perhaps the simplest way to describe it is this: prayer is choosing to remain in God's presence and abide in Him.
